Guildford’s Mayor Richard Billington is sending out a message to anyone who might be having any doubts about getting a Covid vaccination. He wants them to follow his example and get jabbed as soon as they are invited to attend one of the vaccination centres.
Having just received life-saving surgery at St George’s hospital in Tooting, following the discovery of a malignant brain tumour, he had his own doubts about accepting a vaccination.
Cllr Billington told the Guildford Dragon: “I was concerned myself following several sessions of radiation and chemotherapy about having the jab. But there was no need to worry. It has all been researched and tested and I felt nothing when the nurse injected me.
“But I do feel something – profound gratitude to the NHS. First for saving my life with neurosurgery and now guarding me against Covid. Also, I want to thank our brilliant scientists who have created this vaccine in an astonishingly short time. We all owe them big.
“I am ‘shielding’ as someone clinically vulnerable and with the restrictions in place, I can’t get out to thank our Guildford residents who are still working every day to keep the bins emptied and the mail coming through and of course the supermarket staff. And indeed, to all our residents who can’t wait for this to be over.
“Until it is I say ‘Stay Strong1’. We will meet again.
“But now I want all the people in our borough to come forward when a vaccination is offered to them for Covid.”
