Repairs to St Catherine’s Footbridge Delayed

Confusion over what work is to be carried out on St Catherine’s footbridge by Surrey County Council appears to have been cleared up following investigation by County Cllr David Goodwin (Lib Dem, Guildford South West).

It is still hoped that, despite supply and contractor problems, the work will still be completed before April.

The sign posted by St Catherine’s bridge that caused confusion. The signs are expected to be removed by SCC shortly.

It has also emerged that the National Trust was informed of the proposed work but only a day after the date given on which it could first start.

The work will not be to replace the bridge but replace planking on the 1980s bridge, some of which is rotten.

Cllr Goodwin wrote to The Guildford Dragon NEWS: “I have now had a response from SCC’s Countryside team.

“Whilst the works were due to start as advertised, there have been problems with the materials supply and latterly the contractor. This means that the work has been put back.

“It is hoped that it will be done before the end of this financial year but this is still dependent on finding a new contractor to complete the works. Once it starts, it is expected to take about 14 days.

“The officer will be removing the notices later this week and apologises to the residents for delay in these works.”

It is understood that the towpath will remain open but at times it may be necessary to walk round the back of the buttress and provision will be made to protect boaters passing under the bridge.
