The council Executive last night (March 19) agreed to set up a detailed business case to build a replacement for Guildford Spectrum, the popular venue used by local residents, sports clubs and regional visitors that attracts 1.7 million visits each year.
But the building has had issues since first built and changing times and customer demands mean the site needed to be assessed to decide whether to refurbish or build a new one.
The Executive agreed a new build is the more effective option with potentially less disruption because the Spectrum will remain open while a new one is built, one that meets the changing needs of the public and sports groups alike.
Iseult Roche, lead councillor for Community Health, Wellbeing & Project Aspire, said: “Guildford Spectrum makes a significant contribution to our community and continues to be a popular choice for residents and visitors, with many sports clubs and groups regularly using it. The project to replace this will take years to deliver.
“A detailed business case will be developed as well as a consultation process which will include an opportunity for the whole community to give their views on developing a new, technologically advanced, exciting venue that our community can be proud of.”

Cllr Roche means, of course, “Of which our community can be proud.”
She should certainly not proud of her grammar.
