The collision occurred on the crossing on top of the railway bridge in Shalford. Samantha Cox, a Guildford Borough Council worker from the parks department, was working nearby and was asked to man the barrier.
A male cyclist in his 60s was flown to hospital this afternoon (July 11) with serious injuries following a collision, at a pedestrian crossing at Shalford, that occurred around midday. The A281 Guildford to Horsham Road was closed for over two hours.

Paramedics spent some time at the scene giving treatment to the casualty, believed to be a middle aged, male cyclist. The silver Volkswagen is believed to be the car involve in the collision.
A witness at the scene, Samantha Cox, a Guildford Borough Council parks worker was watering trees nearby.
She said: “I did not hear a loud noise but saw people gathering around the crossing and realised something had happened.
“The paramedics seemed to be here within minutes, then the ambulances arrived and then the police.”
The paramedics spent some time treating the casualty at the scene and at one stage a plasma or saline drip was set up.
The Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance was able to land within yards of the crossing in an area between the road and the nearby cemetery.
Ms Cox was asked to man the barrier and only allow emergency service vehicles through. “I was glad to help in any way, of course,” she said.

The air ambulance clears the nearby lamppost before taking the casualty to Southampton General Hospital.
Police officers were seen to be questioning witnesses and have subsequently appealed for witnesses in particular anyone who may have seen the movements of either the cyclist or the silver VW Golf before the incident to contact them immediately.

Long queues of cars formed on the A281 on either side of the accident, many drivers were seen to be turning around to find alternative routes. The road re-opened at 2.15pm.

This and the absurdly dangerous zebra just around the corner are ludicrous examples of incompetent road planning. Not the first time this has happened – we had to stop our cricket match to let the Air Ambulance land when someone got smacked using the crossing.
After all the money wasted on the unenforced 20mph zone tosh, that achieves nothing. Drivers just “floor it” out the other side, if they have even bothered to slow down in the first place.
