Enquiries established that an altercation had earlier taken place in Aldershot Road, near the junction with Worpesdon Road and Woodbridge Hill, involving the occupants of a black Vauxhall Corsa and a dark coloured van. The injured man was taken in the van to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short while later.

A man and two women, all in their 20s, were arrested in the local area shortly after on suspicion of murder and are currently in custody.

An area of Aldershot Road remained cordoned off on Monday night while a forensic examination was carried out at the scene.

Officers have been carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the local area.

A local resident said that an officer who called to her house said that a search using police dogs would take place over night and some gardens would be searched.

The police stated that a post-mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the cause of death.

Police officers are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Aldershot Road from 3pm on Monday, February 2, and may have witnessed what happened, to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Fiona Macpherson said: “This is a tragic incident which has led to the death of a young man and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends at this time.

“Three people have been arrested in connection with the investigation and we are carrying out a number of enquiries in the local area to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“I would ask anyone who was in the Aldershot Road area this afternoon and may have seen the two vehicles or the altercation taking place to contact police as a matter of urgency.”
