Student Reporter Tom Fowler Introduces Himself To Guildford Dragon NEWS Readers

Tom Fowler Student Reporter with The Guildford Dragon NEWS for two weeks

Hello Guildford!

I’m Tom Fowler, a student journalist from Farnborough, currently studying a top-up journalism degree at Southampton Solent. This will add to my foundation degree that I earned with Plymouth University in newspaper and magazine journalism.

My main interests are in local politics, photography and local events. Having looked at various publications I felt The Guildford Dragon NEWS would be a good place for me to further develop my skills and gain some real experience from writers within the industry.

I chose to contact The Dragon about work experience after reading the website’s ‘About us’ section. I aim to make my reporting fair, ethical and accurate and I can see that these are the aspirations of The Guildford Dragon too.

The online newspaper’s stance on encouraging participation in local politics in order to support, promote and strengthen the democratic process is one of the reasons I started studying journalism.

I was also attracted by The Dragon’s apolitical stance and determination to be as objective as possible. Plus, I detected a seasoning of humour within some of the content: always a good thing in my book.

So I am really pleased that I have been accepted for a two-week attachment and already I am busy working on stories. I hope to bring you news and reviews from around Guildford Borough that relate and are important to you. The editorial team is also keen to learn from me about improving their use of social media, an important way to engage with younger readers.
