It’s time to nominate community minded people who go out of their way to improve the lives of others.

The Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons (right), and the County Club’s general manager, Kevin Lorimer. The club is sponsoring the awards and is where the presentations will take place on April 27.

The annual Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community aims to recognise and encourage positive community working in the borough of Guildford, and celebrates residents and groups who make a real difference by volunteering or fostering good relationships.

People who are members of the Facebook page Guildford Past & Present have already been suggesting worthy recipients by posting replies. One person suggested: “The guy who cleans the litter up in Bellfields and the window cleaner who cleans the filthy street signs in Bushy Hill.”

Another suggested “all the fabulous volunteers” who keep The Guildford Club for the Disabled, that meets on Thursdays at Jacobs Well Village Hall, going.

Musician Gavin Thomas was suggested “for his seasonal charity music events.”

While Ben Darnton, who owns the Guildford Collectors’ Records shop in Tunsgate, and who hosts the Facebook page, was also mentioned as worthy of the award!

However, if you know of someone or a group who you think should receive an award, don’t just talk about them, fill in a nomination form and send it to Guildford Borough Council.

It is easy to do online. Complete the online form at www.guildford.gov.uk/mayorsawardforservicetothecommunity.

Alternatively you can email CivicSecretary@guildford.gov.uk or call 01483 444031 for a form.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 22. The Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons, will present the awards at an informal ceremony on Saturday, April 27.

He said: “We are asking people to nominate good deeds, community spirit and the exceptional work to help others that goes on in their community.

“Volunteering – for the people, by the people, is the theme for my mayoral year. These awards recognise and celebrate the remarkable contribution made by the kindness and endless enthusiasm of many local people who make a special effort in their neighbourhood.”

The Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community is sponsored by The County Club, Guildford.
