Taylor Wimpey – the company hoping to build 400 new homes in Tongham – says residents’ views are sought.
By David Reading
Housing developers Taylor Wimpey are hoping to build 1,350 new homes between Guildford and Aldershot – 950 on farmland in the Normandy area and 400 at Manor Farm, Tongham.
In the case of the Normandy proposals, the parish council is in the process of surveying every household in the village and will be hosting a meeting at the Village Hall on November 30 to feed back the results.
As the Guildford Dragon NEWS reported in two recent articles, a formal planning application has not yet been submitted, and the scheme is still in its early design stages, but if approved it would see Normandy village almost double in size.
In the case of the Tongham proposals, a survey is currently up and running to determine the views of local people. Tongham Parish Council is fiercely opposed to the plans, citing potential traffic chaos, flooding risk, loss of the village’s identity and destruction of an area of great landscape value.
The land in question is behind the Hog’s Back Brewery. There would be two entrances into the site, taken from The Street and Poyle Road.
Taylor Wimpey says its proposals “seek to create a new neighbourhood which celebrates the existing character within Tongham”. According to the company there will be “key benefits” including:
Taylor Wimpey claims around 58 per cent of the site will be open green space, including 16 hectares within the south of the site.
Ward councillors Matt Furniss and Sallie Barker, both Conservatives, have set up a survey to obtain residents’ views – pointing out in a joint statement that there has already been significant development already in these villages. Their message is: “Enough is enough.”

The two councillors add: “If any new housing is to be approved, roads improvements, doctors, school places and buses are key.”
The housing boom in the Ash area – including Bewley’s new Ash Lodge Park estate, a total of 481 homes – has already put a strain on local infrastructure including primary healthcare services.
On social media, people are expressing alarm about Taylor Wimpey’s implications for Tongham. There are comments suggesting that 400 new homes would put significant pressure on roads and primary healthcare facilities.
And as one person pointed out: “There is a desperate need for a new doctor’s surgery (in the area).”
Another person lamented that “Our village is now going to be one great big housing estate.”
Another person said: “This all actually makes me want to cry for our village. I have lived in Tongham since 1998 and what was a lovely quiet place to live is now completely ruined.”

As far as the Normandy plans are concerned, the company wants to build 950 homes on farmland between Normandy and Flexford. Read our previous report on the proposals.

Another major issue that certainly needs addressing is the ability, or rather lack of it, to drive along The Street from the White Hart PH to the Hog’s Back Brewery.
Maybe making it one way and putting in a second road to generate better vehicle access.
Surprisingly, there have not been, as far as I’m aware, any major accidents.
The locals must be exasperated.

Villages are key to the rurality of this part of Surrey. Having once wished to move to Normandy, we will be thinking otherwise if the proposals to build by Taylor Wimpy are given the go-ahead.
As an ex-Councillor on Normandy Parish Council, I fully support the efforts of the Parish councillors to gain the residents’ opinions.

Enough is enough. Tongham has seen a massive expansion already over the last few years and is not ready for more homes.
The Taylor Wimpey plans for Tongham, Ash and surrounding areas are not acceptable. This is an area of cultural significance that needs protecting.
The field it wants to develop is designated AGLV (Area of Great Landscape Value), bordering an AONB. Plans for flooding, traffic, the loss of nature (including adders, bats, etc) and additional amenities are woeful and we intend to resist and oppose.
