This toy, perhaps played with only yesterday, and others left behind indicated a sudden departure.

The Gypsy and Traveller Group quit their encampment on Effingham Common early this morning, possibly before first light.

There was a signs of a sudden departure with unopened sweet packets, children’s toys and a half used loaf of bread left lying on the ground.

The main gate on to Effingham Common Road had been resecured by around 10am today (August 29, 2017).

Litter strewn across some of the site.

Some litter had been left on the site although the amount was limited due to  proactive role taken by Guildford Borough Council wardens who provided rubbish sacks and kept in contact with the Travellers.

In other areas litter had been collected into bags for collection.

One local resident said: “Some of the Gypsy and Traveller group respected this beautiful setting on the common whereas others clearly had not.”

In a letter to The Guildford Dragon NEWS, Sir Paul Beresford MP, whose Mole Valley constituency includes Effingham, said: “I have conferred with a number of my parliamentary colleagues and we feel the law needs a complete rethink. Perhaps some of the errant behaviour could be made criminal so our already over worked police could act directly.”
