Last Year’s (2016) BBC Community Award Winners

Two Guildford organisations are amongst the finalists for the seventh BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards.

The awards are dedicated to celebrating unsung heroes from across the local area. Over recent months, listeners have been invited to make their nominations across nine categories including Fundraiser, Volunteer and Young Achiever of the Year.

The two Guildford finalists are in the fundraiser and young achiever categories are:

The Guildford & Godalming Fundraising Group of the British Heart Foundation which over the past 30 years has raised in excess of £11 million. This money has supported the Cardiac Unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, the local community and helped to provide vital research into Cardio Vascular Disease.

The Guildford charity Challengers is dedicated to providing inclusive play for disabled children and young people. In September, the charity suffered from a devastating fire that caused significant damage to its Guildford premises. The Young Play Worker team on duty were incredible, evacuating all children to safety in a very difficult and stressful situation.

Mark Carter, BBC Surrey Assistant Editor said: “We received another incredible collection of stories and our judges faced a tough task in choosing the finalists. We’ve heard some terribly sad stories making the headlines in recent months, so this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate amazing people making a really positive difference in the local area.”

BBC Surrey Editor Sara David who was part of the judging panel commented: “I’m so grateful to all of our listeners who took the time to make a nomination. We’re now looking forward to welcoming all of the finalists to our awards evening, which is always one of my favourite nights of the year!”

All of the shortlisted nominees will now attend a special ceremony at the Gatwick Crowne Plaza Hotel on Monday, November 20.
