An uber driver was caught out by two GBC licensing officers when he agreed to take them on an unbooked journey, against the conditions of his licence.

Following a subsequent prosecution brought by Guildford Borough Council (GBC), Ifran Hamid Hussain, has been found guilty of illegally plying for hire in Guildford town centre.

The driver was fined £250 plus a £30 victim surcharge and will have to pay the council’s costs of £1,500.

In the early hours of August 28, last year (2016), Hussein parked outside the George Abbot pub on the lower High Street agreed to take them on an unbooked journey, for which he was not licensed.

Cllr Graham Ellwood

Cllr Graham Ellwood, lead councillor for licensing and community safety, said: “Uber and other private hire drivers are only allowed to take pre-booked journeys and this breach shows a clear disregard for the rules.

“Our licensing officers are working night and day to address this issue. We’re pleased that we have successfully prosecuted this driver and hope that this sends a strong message that illegally plying for hire is not acceptable in Guildford.”

The case was heard at Guildford Magistrates Court on Wednesday, August 16 2017.
