Staff from the University of Surrey’s estates team teamed up with residents in Westborough to help them create a garden with a view.

Westborough residents with members of the University of Surrey’s estates team and Guildford Borough Council community wardens at the new community garden space at Cathedral View.

A disused washing and drying area off Cathedral View was identified by one of Guildford Borough Council’s community wardens, prompting a consultation with local residents.

The university, which is committed to engaging and helping its nearby communities, was given the go-ahead by residents to help them transform the area.

Overgrown vegetation was cleared, the brick paving was swept clean and a wooden planter was installed and planted up.

It is hoped that the space will now be used by local people who will take ownership and visit regularly to grow flowers and vegetables, meet friends or simply take time to enjoy the view.

The initiative is one of several, local, green-space projects the university is involved with. To find out more, or to talk to the university about green-space opportunities near you, contact public engagement manager Ross Kelway at r.kelway@surrey.ac.uk or telephone him on 01483 686848.
