Here are some latest volunteering opportunities with organisations and charities in this area and some latest news from Voluntary Action South West Surrey.

Phyllis Tuckwell’s new charity shop and donation centre

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care is opening a new charity shop and donation centre at Pew Corner, Artington, Guildford

The charity says: “Whether you can spare a few hours a week or on an ad hoc basis, you can make a real difference to helping fund hospice care in your local community. No experience is needed, just enthusiasm!”

Pew Corner opens on Monday, May 4 and will sell a wide range of high quality “pre-loved items”, including ladies’, men’s and children’s clothes, shoes and accessories, books, CDs, DVDs, games, toys, bric-a-brac and furniture!

The shop will be at the front of the building, a donation centre at the back, and parking.

The charity adds: “Before it opens, the stock for this shop needs to be sorted, priced and arranged into eye-catching displays, ready for the grand opening.

“If you love the idea of sorting a bag of donations into different categories ready to be sold, or are great at finding out what value items should be priced at, we would love you to join our team.

“Maybe you’ve got an eye for antiques, or could create a window display that will stop people in their tracks?”

There are also opportunities for delivery drivers to collect donations and deliver purchases that are too large for donors and shoppers to take themselves, such as items of furniture.

Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey – join the team or take part in a fund-raising 5k obstacle course

Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey is dedicated to enabling and empowering people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, partially sighted and deaf-blind.

It champions independence, where people thrive in their communities and achieve their aspirations. It offers expert support, services, and advice across Surrey, delivering its services in homes, communities, and from its main office hub.

Volunteer roles include home visitors, telephone befrienders, drivers, help at events and fundraising, technology support, and administration.

Its fundraising Inflatable 5k Obstacle Course is at Stoke Park, Guildford on Saturday, May 9.

The charity says: “You’ll be jumping, sliding and laughing all the way to the finish line. Grab your friends, family or tackle it on your own. Lace up your trainers and get ready for the ultimate day out!”

Children aged between five and 15 years old must be accompanied by a paying participating adult.

Community magazine needs a new volunteer to look after its advertising accounts

The popular Keeping in Touch free community magazine delivered to people in the Fairlands area of Guildford, and available online, is seeking a volunteer to look after the accounts of the magazine’s advertising revenue, the time spent being about four to six hours a month.

Current editor Sheila Willis says: “You do not need to handle any actual money. At the moment, working from a spreadsheet, once a month you will need to see who is advertising for the next three months.

“Then, by email send advertisers an invoice for three months giving details of the Fairlands, Liddington Hall, Gravetts Lane Community Association’s (FLGCA) bank account.

“These details and the invoices are already set up.  You will have access to the bank account, on a read only basis, to see if the invoice has been paid. Sometimes you will need to send a reminder.

“All our advertisers are on first name terms, thanks to Bob our accounts person at the moment, and it is a joy corresponding with them.

“You will need to liaise, at times, with our lovely new editor Sarah, who takes over for the July edition of the magazine. This is usually to pass on any changes to an advert that may be asked for by the advertisers. Depending on that particular month as to how many invoices you need to send out this will take on average no more than four to six hours per month.”

Bob and Sheila Willis will be only too pleased to meet with anyone interested in the role over a coffee to discuss any details. At the moment Bob is working from an Excel spreadsheet but there may be a more up to date quicker and easier method to use!

Bob and Sheila wish to retire from their volunteer roles that they have held for over 14 years.

Sheila adds: “The accounts role is not difficult, please do come forward and be part of the new magazine team and to save it.”

Funds available for community groups based in a radius around North Street, Guildford – hurry as deadline is on May 11.

Developer Berkley, building the St Edward development in Guildford town centre, has funds it would like to give to community groups, charities, and so on, that are based in about a mile or so radius from the development itself.

Developer Berkley’s map showing the radius in which funds are available.

It says: “We are pleased to launch a new community fund supporting projects that strengthen wellbeing and create safe, sustainable places for local people – reflecting both the Berkeley Foundation’s focus on a place to call home and health and wellbeing, and Guildford Borough Council’s priorities for a more inclusive, prosperous, and sustainable borough.

“We welcome applications from social enterprises, charities, community organisations, and informal groups proposing projects that directly benefit the communities surrounding our North Street development.

“Please outline clearly how the funding will be used, with as much detail as possible. We are open to being either the sole funder or part of a small funding partnership for the right project. We look forward to seeing your ideas, whether written or recorded. Successful projects will be announced in May 2026.”

If you want to apply, hurry as the deadline is on May 11.
