Join me, David Rose, for an illustrated talk, When Peace Came – Guildford at the end of the Great War, this coming Monday evening, November 12, at the Keep pub in Castle Street, starting at 7.30pm.

Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 at the Red Cross Annexe military war hospital at the County School for Girls building in Farnham Road, Guildford.

My talk will focus on the town as the war came to a close 100 years ago with food shortages, the Women’s Land Army, local military war hospitals, fundraising campaigns, Armistice Day and peace celebrations in July 1919.

Planting of an oak tree in the Castle Grounds during the peace celebrations in 1919.

It will also look at the town in the 1920s with the much-needed building of houses in the supposed ‘land fit for heroes’.

The unveiling of the war memorial in the Castle Grounds in 1921 will also be featured along with stories of some of the men whose names are on it as, as well as two men from the Second World War on the additional plinth that was only added in 1995. The new war memorial commemorating service personnel killed on active service since the Second World War will also be featured.

The evening promises to be thoughtful as well as entertaining. Members of the audience will be more than welcome to add their stories and memories throughout.

Entry is free, all that is asked is that you put a few gold coins in the glass that will be passed around to show your appreciation. There will be some free nibbles during the interval.

The event is being hosted by the Keep pub and Ben Darnton of Ben’s Collectors Record shop in Tunsgate.
