When the bridge over the railway [near the entrance to Guildford Crematorium] was replaced, it was done professionally enough, but with zero thought whether its safety might be improved. Network Rail acts with a blinkered “exact replacement” policy and because there is no footway there was institutionalized bone-headedness instead of any thought whether there might be an improved crossing within the same budget.
Accordingly, any cycle or foot crossing of the bridge is a lottery. I do not know if this was the cause of the accident, but there will surely be one at some point. Yet Network Rail is an organization that gives instructions to its (adult) staff on how to cross the road, because it is a “safety first” operation.
Editor’s note: The police statement gave the accident location as Compton and an ambulance helicopter is believed to have landed near the Compton village end of New Pond Road.
