Women Assaulted on River Wey Towpath – 19-year-old Man In Custody

Two women were assaulted on the river towpath near Walnut Tree Close in Guildford yesterday (February 2). Following the incident a 19-year-old man was arrested in and is currently in police custody.

The double assault occurred between 8.20pm and 8.40pm. A 20-year-old woman, walking along the towpath by the footbridge and the Odeon cinema, was grabbed by a man, unknown to her, who pushed her to the ground and attempted to kiss her before physically assaulting her. She sustained minor injuries to her face.

A 31-year-old woman cyclist who was passing by witnessed what happened and attempted to intervene. She was then also assaulted by the man and also sustained minor superficial injuries to her face.

Detective Sergeant Dave Bentley from Guildford Criminal Investigation Department, said: “This was a seemingly random attack on two women who are understandably extremely shaken up.

“I am urging anybody who witnessed what happened or saw a man acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident to call us as soon as possible – any information you have could assist our investigation.”
