From Margaret AtkinsonWI

Worplesdon Women’s Institute has had a busy period leading up to Christmas.

A coffee morning was held at the end of October to raise funds for the Sponsor a Pipe appeal at Guildford Cathedral and a group visited the Electric Theatre and enjoyed ‘Lilies on the Land’, a reminiscence of the lives led by members of the Women’s Land Army in the Second World War.

This month we held our Christmas tea at Worplesdon Memorial Hall and were greeted by sparkling wine followed by a selection of homemade food and Christmas cake.

We were joined by guests from Brookwood WI, Worplesdon pre-school, Rosemary Horton our WI advisor and the Revd Martin Wright and Geraldine Wright.

Entertainment was provided by Julie Beavan who gave a wonderful performance of haunting melodies on her harp. A raffle where everyone won a prize rounded off a festive afternoon.

To complete our Christmas programme we visited Winchester’s Christmas markets for the day, enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Black Bison in Worplesdon and attended the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk on Ice at Guildford Spectrum.

An important event in our new year calendar is our jumble sale on Wednesday, March 16 2016, at 2pm in Worplesdon Memorial Hall.

A huge selection of bargains including clothes, jewellery, toys, puzzles, household, books and good-as-new with a homemade cake stall and tombola, it’s not to be missed. Please look out for our announcements nearer the date in the local press and radio.

We welcome new members at any time, so if you live in the area and enjoy these interests, Worplesdon WI meet at 2.30pm on the first Wednesday in the month at Worplesdon Memorial Hall, Perry Hill, Guildford. Please come along.
