Challengers, a local charity supporting disabled children and young people, has three schemes across all ages running this summer holidays. They are now looking for people to come and join the fun.

According to research conducted by Contact A Family, a staggering 86% of disabled young people do not have regular access to play or leisure. Challengers believes socialising is a critical part of a young person’s development and is why it has become so vital to families in Guildford.

A summer of fun awaits at Challengers.

The schemes will be running weekdays and on Saturdays throughout the summer holidays. Guildford play scheme, for ages four to 12 years and running from Challengers Guildford Playcentre at Stoke Park, has fantastic activities on offer. Youngsters can make their own musical instruments, get pampered with foot and hand massages and get competitive in an egg and spoon race.

Guildford youth scheme, for ages 13 to 18 years and running from Bellfields Youth Centre, will be starting the summer with a delicious barbecue. Young people will be showing off their skills at a circus themed day, and getting their hands on some scaly reptiles that are coming to visit.

Guildford young adult scheme, for ages 18 to 25 years and running from Stoughton Youth Centre, will be taking a trip to the Brighton seaside for some fish and chips, seeking out some bargains with their friends at the shops, and going to see the latest blockbuster at the cinema.

Lots of things to do all summer long!

Challengers is an independent charity, with it headquarters in Guildford, providing play and leisure opportunities for disabled children and young people.

It is unique as every child is welcome to go and play no matter the severity of impairment. Challengers strives to provide an environment for young people that is their own, a space that is relaxing, supportive and above all else, fun.

The schemes also provide parents with short breaks which families say is crucial to them leading normal lives.

One parent said: “Challengers for us is a godsend, it is a safe, happy place for me to leave one of the most precious things in my life for a few hours, worry free, to look after the other precious things in my life.”

If you would like to go and be a part of any of the Guildford schemes, please get in touch with the operations team on 01483 230930 or email operations@disability-challengers.org.

The booking period has just started, and you can take a look at all the activities the schemes have planned for the summer online.
