Two early goals by Belfast Giants where all they needed to deliver a 2-0 defeat of the Flames playing away last night (December 12). At face-off, the Giants stood just one point ahead of the Flames in the Elite Hockey League standings.
Marcus Eriksson on a powerplay less than three minutes after start put Giants in front and seconds later Ciaran Long doubled the advantage that remained on the board through remainder of the set.
The 14-9 shot count that favoured Belfast in the first period carried over and repeated itself in the second with Justin Fazio and Jackson Whistle each turning away all the rubber they saw across the frame leaving Flames still in a two-goal hole to begin the third.
Nothing changed across the final 20 minutes despite the Flames tipping the shots 11-9 across the 20 minute segment.
Fazio made 35 saves on 37 shots while Whistle posted the clean sheet with 29 saves at his end.
“It’s unfortunate they had such a quick early start,” said assistant coach Andy Hemmings. “We got better as the game went on and had our better chances in the third, but we were chasing all game and couldn’t get a break to get back in it.”
“We stay here so we get another chance tomorrow night and hopefully we can find a way to get the upper hand.”
