Castle Green Bowlers In The Heat Of The Action

Castle Green Bowling Club’s (CGBC) men’s team did not do well in their last two Tuesday Triples League matches. They lost to Albury (away) by 11 shots on July 16.

BowlsIt was an extremely hot day and some of us were suffering from the heat. And they lost again, by 19 shots, to Ewhurst (in a home game) on July 23. The heat was no excuse – the Ewhurst team was stronger on the day. That makes the club even with Ewhurst, as Castle Green beat them in an away match earlier in the season.

In their friendly games against neighbouring clubs, Castle Green did somewhat better. On a warm sunny Wednesday evening on July 17, with thunderhead clouds looming in the distance, along with the far distant rumble of thunder, CGBC played Bramley BC at home, and narrowly lost by 42 to 45.  Colin Summerhayes’s team, with Tim Sampson and John Heyes, won by 17 to 15; Jill Bird’s team, with Margret Plummer and Hilary Vogel, drew 13 to 13; and Brian West’s team, with Dorothy Newman and Paul Plummer lost by 12 to 17. Fortunately, it was not quite as hot as it has been recently. They enjoyed a good ploughman’s supper prepared by Derek and Mary Redgwell.

Then, on a baking hot Sunday afternoon on July 21, CGBC played Hersham Village BC at home, and narrowly won by 43 to 41.  Colin Summerhayes’s team, with Julie Hall and Dennis Hirst-Marsden, won by 19 to 13; Paul Plummer’s team, with Rob  Helliwell and Tim Sampson, drew 13 to13; and Rob Williams’s team, with Margret Plummer and Hilary Vogel lost by 11 to 15. It was a pleasant afternoon – a close game spent in good company.
