City’s Losing Run Continues

Guildford City (0) 0, Sheerwater (0) 2

By Barry Underwood

After another defeat at the Spectrum Guildford now find themselves nine points adrift of safety in the still relatively early league table.

After losing key players manager Carl Taylor is battling hard to ring the changes within the squad to get the club back on track. But on this evidence, there is some way still to go.

After the game one Sheerwater player described the first half as “turgid” which was a fair description of the first 45 minutes. A radiant rainbow that followed a brisk squall easily won the competition for the spectators’ attention –  truly, there was little on the pitch to excite.

Just prior to the half-time whistle City debutant keeper Mason Whitnell made an excellent save enabling City to go into the break with the match goalless. City hadn’t created a shot on target, and their creativity was restricted to balls into the box that came to nothing.

Josh Adjei has eyes only for the ball.

City fans hoped that their side would be transformed after the break and would mount a determined bid to win the match. It looked positive when Kai Zini’s shot from just outside the box zipped inches over the crossbar.

But that proved to be the best Guildford could offer. Sheerwater were enjoying good possession whilst City were unable to make good use of their time with the ball and attacks were few and far between.

The Sheers started to look dangerous. Crosses into the box were cleared, but finally in the 60th minute the deadlock was broken. With his first touch after arriving off the bench Harvey Valter was played in to shoot home from an angle.

Sheerwater now had all of the play and twice shots on target were blocked by determined defenders. With 10 minutes remaining the visitor’s Rahman Ajbola saw a low shot go just wide.

City’s attempts at going forward too often foundered on runners being caught offside, and Sheerwater’s goalkeeper Roberto Silva will have had few quieter afternoons.

In stoppage time Sheerwater extended their lead when Tom Gardner volleyed home from a corner.
