A South Western Railway guard at Waterloo Station, James Doe, has teamed up with her employers to encourage football fans to attend a local football fixture this Saturday March 22, National Non-league Day.

34 per cent of us cannot name a single non-league football team, according to a survey conducted by  South Western Railway and here in Guildford that is a particular shame as Guildford City Football Club has a proud history.

Barry Underwood MBE secretary of the club said: “Guildford City is Guildford’s local non-league team and we always encourage and welcome new supporters to come along to the Spectrum and support our young, aspiring team which plays attractive football.

“City has a history of which we can be proud and we hope to return the club to the days when thousands of fans would attend our matches.

“We are not playing this Saturday but our next home game is at 7.30pm next Wednesday, March 26 at the Spectrum. Please come along.”

The average home in England is within an average of eight miles of a local club, and according to those who have attended a non-league match in the past, the best things about going are the affordability (49 per cent), the family-friendly atmosphere (41 per cent), and easy accessibility (33 per cent).

However, a staggering 75 per cent of Brits have never attended a non-league match, despite the fact it takes place on their doorsteps. Meanwhile, the furthest people have travelled one way for a Premier League match is a lengthy 116.5 miles on average.

When it comes to cost, significant savings can be made by choosing a local fixture over a higher league game. Premier League fans spend an average of £54 on the ticket alone, whilst a full day out at a Non-League game (including entry, travel, and refreshments) costs fans just £20.80 on average.

Admission to City’s games costs £8 and £5 for concessions. Free parking close by is free at Spectrum.
