Letter: Fewer Buses Will Result in More Traffic Congestion

In response to: Ash Aspect – Withdrawal of Bus Service is ‘Punishing’ Ash and Tongham Residents

The “worsening traffic congestion” given as the reason for this change to the bus route is presumably congestion caused by cars. But then passengers not having access to buses results in even further congestion as people resort to using cars, if they have them.

In my experience, many motorists don’t need an excuse not to use public transport (or to walk or cycle), so please don’t let’s give them too many excuses.

I carried out a (admittedly not very scientific) survey of traffic travelling along the Woodbridge Road at around 4.30pm last Thursday (February 14). Virtually every single car contained only the driver. And the three buses that passed during my short and unscientific survey also contained only one passenger.

Something’s not right.
