Three second period goals put Guildford Flames in a lead they would not give up before adding a couple more in the third no reply on the way to a 5-2 home win over the visiting Fife Flyers last night (December 6).
The two points earned keeps the Flames seven points ahead of the relegation zone while above them things are tighter, fourth place is just three points away.
After a scoreless opening set, Jake Coughler kicked off the scoring at 27:01. Matt Alvaro added another just 16 seconds later.
A Cole Ully powerplay goal at 31:22 had Spectrum’s men three goals to the good but quick answers from Josh Winquist and Logan Neilson 59 seconds apart, the latter on the powerplay, pulled Flyers within a single to close the period.
In the third, a pair of Mathieu Gosselin goals, one on the powerplay at 42:15 and another in the 57th minute, completed the offence on the Flames win.
Flames’ goaltender Justin Fazio made 31 saves on 33 shots against the Flyers’ Shane Owen who was 43 for 48.
Manager Paul Dixon said: “I thought we were full value for the win even with some tough moments, with most of the territory, a good shot advantage and making good use of our powerplays. It’s a great way to start the weekend and now we have to carry it over into Coventry on Sunday.”
