Guildford Flames recovered from an early two goal deficit, then tied it again in the last five minutes but a Sheffield Steelers’ dagger 49 seconds from time sent Flames home empty handed on the back of a 4-3 defeat.
Clifford Pu started the scoring for Steelers at 12:09, Mitchell Heard doubled the difference less than two minutes later and the home team went to break with the two goal spread.
A pair of Flames’ replies inside the first half of the second period less than 60 seconds apart levelled thanks to Josh Nixon and Mathieu Gosselin, but a late Cold Shudra answer sent Steelers to the third back in front 3-2.
Just inside the final four minutes an Ethan Strang marker levelled it again at 3-3 and it looked like the visitors might have at least a point but Dominic Cormier made sure that didn’t happen with a last minute strike to secure a Steelers’ win.
Justin Fazio made 24 saves on 28 shots against Matthew Greenfield who was 23 of 26.
“When you are able to tie a good team like that in their building in short order and do it again later on, you hope you can convert those momentum type evens to a win through the night, but we just couldn’t make it happen,” said Paul Dixon.
“Early in the third we missed some excellent chances and then couldn’t make much of a powerplay and that was a great opportunity to put ourselves in a position where a late goal might have been a winner.”
“We will re-set and try to do build on some of tonight’s positives to be ready for Belfast Sunday.”
