Flames won an impressive 6-2 victory yesterday (December 21) away, against table-topping Nottingham Panthers. It was only the Panthers’ second regulation defeat of the league campaign.
Three unanswered goals in the first period gave the Flames a lead they would never hand back. Mathieu Gosselin opened the scoring just 71 seconds in. Jake Coughler followed up at 7:46 and they were three goals to the good thanks to a Josh Wallker strike at the 11 minute mark.
At 25:05 Panthers got themselves on the board through former Flames skater Bryan Lemos. An ensuing powerplay for the home team and a chance to pull a bit closer backfired when Nick Seitz bagged a short-handed strike to re-store the three goal difference then Waller’s second of the evening in the 33rd minute set Flames to a 5-1 lead at the break.
In the third, Matt Alfaro pulled Panthers closer inside the last five minutes, but a Cole Ully empty netter shortly thereafter sealed the final result.
Flames’ keeper Justin Faziohelped secure the win for the visitors (final shots unavailable). Jason Grande started in goal for Panthers and had eight saves on 11 shots before Kevin Carr came on in relief to turn away 13 of 15.
Coach Paul Dixon commented: “The first period was as dominant as a period as we have had all season and it was great to have converted that pressure into a solid lead that was a big part of a great win and a three-point weekend.”
