Letter: A Brave Executive Selection by Caroline Reeves

From James Walsh

in response to: Lib Dem Leader Appoints Her New Team For Guildford Borough Council

A brave choice by Caroline Reeves, and a magnanimous one to include three opposition councillors [including John Rigg, who is not a full member and has no voting right] in her cabinet.

With politics seemingly defined by division nationally, this appears to be a move towards pulling together the “town and country” gap here in Guildford, and that in itself is a good thing.

Good too to have a balanced Executive, with a range of experience and gender equality.

GBC Executive May 2019

As one of the two remaining opposition parties on the council, we will play our part accordingly, supportive where policies are best for our residents and the borough as a whole, and shining a light where things need to be rethought or reconsidered.

Time now to move on from the May 2 election and the subsequent horsetrading, and time to get on with business.

This was indeed brave, but also wise to begin a new era for Guildford, and put an end to single-party rule. It has not served us at all well the past four years.

It is also welcome that no deal was struck with the Tories, as a reward for their support on the leadership vote. That would have been a travesty. The people have made it clear they have no more appetite for mediocrity and self-interest.

We now have a leadership much endowed with talent, and some youth, something woefully lacking since 2015.

Now comes the hard graft of unpicking the Local Plan, and developing a plan that residents want, rather than what developers want.
