Letter: Ash Level Crossing Will Not Help Deal with Extra Traffic Entering Guildford

Ash level crossing

From Bernard Parke

hon alderman and former Mayor of Guildford

The Ash level crossing has been with us since the railways arrived and now we read that a new £22.8 million bridge is in the offing which is intended to help improve the traffic flow in view of the proposed building of 1,750 new houses in Ash.

The new bridge will not help the congestion leading to the town centre via Aldershot Road. Just look at how the Hindhead Tunnel put considerable pressure on the A3 junction at the Cathedral Roundabout.

I am sure that consideration to the alternative route available along the Hog’s Back has been given, but again this will be under great pressure from the extra weight of traffic if the Blackwell Farm development goes ahead.

The question must be asked that with this considerable development can it be sustained in our town and indeed our villages?

Well said – though the real overarching question is, “Do we the residents of Guildford actually want a ‘Guildford New Town’?” And 14,000 new houses is the equivalent of a new town.

If so, will the question be asked of our newly elected councillors in May? They will be lumbered with the problem, not the current Exec who caused it. Who amongst them has the backbone to say where is the £2 billion coming from, to upgrade our infrastructure?

Currently, it appears the Executive have made a decision we will, like it or not, get a new town, but is central government which is forcing a new town on us, going to provide the financial package necessary to install the pre-requisite infrastructure?
