Letter: Do the University Results Show the Market System Working?

The University of Surrey

From Gordon Bridger

hon alderman and former Mayor of Guildford

Why are people so unfair on the University of Surrey just because they have so many successful students and such able teachers that 50% get first class degrees?

Do the results show how well the market system works?

If the results could be published by discipline and by nationality we would find,  I suspect, that all the brightest students have got first class degrees in tourism, and that by far the most students getting first class degrees are clever hardworking Chinese people determined to ensure their high fees are justified, while our Brits are shown up once again.

Isn’t Cllr Matt Furniss a graduate of Surrey University in Politics and International Relations?

Yet when writing in a thread he started in FB on what GBC is doing about homelessness, he claimed he was too young to know about “Right to Buy” or the financial issues of council/hosing association/private rented accommodation.

Still, I suppose home politics history isn’t too important for someone with so much local political responsibility.
