In response to: Guildford’s Rebel Tory MP Anne Milton Outlines Her Stance on PM’s No-Deal Brexit
Regardless of not agreeing and voting with her conscience, Anne Milton has now left Guildford without a credible Conservative candidate for any upcoming election.
People here had voted for her knowing her background and history. This makes it far more likely that in an election, Guildford would turn Liberal which when taken into the national picture could likely lead to a Labour win.
Has Anne thought ahead? I wonder why a Conservative would be happy to see her own party destroyed, out of power and all her colleagues out too?
Sometimes as a responsible MP, you have to look at the long term picture. Anne is known for sitting on the fence (even Wikipedia describes her that way). She often abstains from voting and when she finally does, she does so in a way to bring down her own party. How very strange.

I sympathise a little with Jack Brown. With Anne Milton gone who will stand for Guildford Conservatives now? Fear not I would suggest. There are other credible candidates within the Guildford Conservative stable.
Many more politicians are now nailing their colours to the mast and Anne Milton is one of them. The Brexit issue is too large for broad church politics. A political party cannot have it both ways. Things are coming to a head, hence the rebellions and defections.
Politicians have for too long tried to play both ends against the middle to try and hang on to voters with polar opposite views and we haven’t been able to get a straight answer out of any of them on the issue.
Those days of ambiguity are now over. It would not be surprising if Anne Milton and other Conservative rebels now went to the Lib Dems as loyalty to party and voters is taking second place to the real issue; which is not Brexit versus Remain: it is global governance versus the nation-state.

I am impressed by John Armstrong’s view on the political class. I think I would define myself as a liberal who is eternally grateful for having been born where I was born. With a lot of soul searching, I short-sightedly voted Remain for the sake of a few years of stability on behalf of a close future generation.
I know, deep in my heart, with experienced certainty, that Europe is heading into a self-destructive cul-de-sac. I am both baffled and disappointed by the timid short-sightedness of many of our politicians whose lack of faith in our country is currently not only destroying all hope of us being a future participant in Europe but is castrating our politicians so we can no longer grow as a new, if small, voice on the world stage.

Who are the “credible candidates within the Guildford Conservative stable”? Surely none of the Tory councillors who rammed through their flawed Local Plan. 24 of them, including apparently full-time politician Cllr Furniss, was chucked out at the May elections – by the people, not their party
The Conservatives will parachute in a careerist from their Westminster stable. Could it be Dominic Cummings, the ruthless power behind The Johnson throne? Heaven forbid.
