From Gerald Bland
In response to: Lib Dems Pledge Wide-Ranging ‘Better Deal” in May Elections
Perhaps we can all agree that our system of local government needs a major overhaul and that whilst it persists there is little scope for a non-unitary authority such as Guildford to achieve any meaningful outcome without buy-in at national and county levels?
In exercising my vote in the May council elections I will not, therefore, pay too much attention to manifestos and fine words, yet alone the candidate’s political affiliations. A comparison of the personal and professional qualities of the candidates standing in Holy Trinity Ward will ultimately determine how I vote.

I agree that not paying too much attention to manifestos is wise judging by the behaviour of our MPs of all parties regarding Brexit who promise one thing (including carrying out the instruction of the people) and then do the opposite.
Are we witnessing the end of democracy as we thought we knew it?

Can I suggest to Mr Bland, and anyone else looking for the right criteria for judging their local candidates’ credentials, they might consider asking why the candidate in question is standing? It is common knowledge at Millmead that our two current leaders, as well as accruing much power through their various GBC political and council roles, are ambitious to reach a Westminster destination (Goodness knows why, judging by recent events).
Can I suggest that a complete lack of party political motivation is a real plus point? Local councillors should, first and foremost, be there to serve their community. End of story.

The imminent Council elections must be seen as an opportunity to rid ourselves of the dysfunctional “representatives” we currently have in charge. Hopefully, independent candidates of proven integrity will stand in the wards of the worst offenders many of whom have shown they are not fit to hold public office.
