Letter: I Wish to Publicly Thank Cllr Hurdle

Published on: 27 Apr, 2019

From Paul Spooner

leader of Guildford Borough Council

In response to: Guildford Must Say ‘Enough!’

I think Cllr Hurdle is a man of immense integrity and have really appreciated his involvement in the council over the past four years.

Whilst I fundamentally disagreed with his position against adoption of the Local Plan this week, I agree with his concerns for the future and we do need to ensure that future focus is on unlocking urban sites and regeneration over the coming years to ensure that we are not forced to look at significant green belt loss in the future during reviews.

I congratulated Cllr Hurdle on his speech during the adjournment at the full council meeting because I thought it focused on the understandable issues of concern when weighing up the Local Plan.

May I publicly thank Cllr Hurdle for his approach to the council. It has been a pleasure having him as a member.

It’s a pity that Cllr Spooner and his sidekick Cllr Furniss were not more polite to Mike Hurdle and especially Cllr Susan Parker.

I have attended many debates at GBC, sitting in the Public Gallery, and have been appalled at the needless insults and rudeness from Cllr Spooner and Cllr Furniss, particularly at Cllr Susan Parker.

This shows clearly their bullying tactics which they have used to get their dreadful Local Plan adopted against so much public hostility.

It is obvious that clever debating is not their forte so they have to resort to insults.
