Letter: Increased Traffic from New Developments Will Increase Compton’s Problems

In response to: Borough and County Councils Must Work Together to Tackle Air Pollution

I support Fiona in her assessment of air quality failings. On the odd occasion I use the road in Compton to the A31 it is always crawling. The A31 Wanborough junction traffic-light system needs an overhaul, with the increase in traffic from the proposed Blackwell Farm development, I’d be surprised if anyone ever gets in or out of Compton again.

In defence of the “school parker”, I would like to remind readers that most mums now work. It’s an endless rush to get everyone fed, washed and dressed, drive them to school, chuck the kids out the car and then rush to work. There just isn’t any time to walk/cycle the kids to school and there aren’t any school buses.

If we are to change the paradigm of the school run we need to start with the high cost of living and the demand for both parents to work.

Sensible, pragmatic comment; short-term partial amelioration is relatively easy but don’t expect any long-term remedies before 2040; probably later.

Even longer before the need for the majority of both parents to work goes away.

The Hindhead Tunnel was opened in 2011 after formal consideration started in 1970.
