Letter: Lib Dem Campaign Newsletter is Fake News

From James Walsh

Labour borough councillor for Stoke

In response to: We Invite Guildford Labour to Back Up Pro-EU Words With Action

The point here is that the Liberal Democrats claim that their MPs would give the public the final say over Brexit – while also claiming that a Lib Dem government will scrap it. A logical fallacy if ever there was one.

The assertion that Labour will not give the public a final say on the matter is, unfortunately, a bald-faced lie. Labour’s position on Brexit has been tortuous, confused and downright frustrating – but the policy is now set and is explicitly designed to get any negotiated deal signed-off by the public, through a referendum.

So, the complete opposite of what we’re all seeing on these leaflets. Fake news indeed.

    I have not seen the leaflet in question, but before using Trumpian language about it let’s appreciate that, if you’re going to vote on Brexit, the general election choice is crystal clear:
    Tories = Leave
    Labour = Referendum
    LibDems = Remain.

    If none get a majority, there may be a fudge. But the party positions are not at all “tortuous”.
