In response to: New Guildford Street Naming Policy
Personally, I think the news about the standardisation of street signs is a sad development. Old street signs are part of Guildford’s local history.
It is interesting to see the range of signs through the ages. They date from the nineteenth century where we live.
I do hope the old original signs in our roads will not be replaced just to introduce “branding”. Is that really necessary? We know where we live and sat navs find the postcode these days.
I see it is seen as another money making exercise. Will conservation area policy prohibit replacement?

While I agree that our old street nameplates should be preserved and maintained, some of them are in odd places and are not readily visible, so the addition of new plates could be a good thing.
As for perhaps not needing them, not everyone is surgically attached to a satnav or mobile phone, so street nameplates are still very much needed. Particularly to help emergency services in finding places.
