From Paul Spooner
Conservative leader of Guildford Borough Council
In response to: New Chantries Campaign Group Accuses Council of Dissembling Over Campsite
We are bringing this issue back to Executive this week to clarify given the “misunderstanding” that appears to be spreading by social media and by those linked to the Independent campaign.
Those that watch the webcast on this item will see that provision for camping should be included in any agreement with an education provider but that seems to have been lost in translation, however we look forward to all those who have complained about perceived loss of camping provision do book and use the site in the coming months.

Firstly, I believe that because one option involved a sum greater than £200K and the GBC-owned Chantries site covers two council wards, under the GBC constitution, 28 days notice should have been given before making this U-turn decision.
But it is a decision which Cllr Spooner should know will be welcomed by so many and shows that no matter how small a group of Independents maybe they can still make a difference when inappropriate decisions are made by the ruling Executive members.
And at the end of all this unnecessary upset to the regular campsite users, I thank Cllr Spooner for the change of track on this one. A new group has been formed who would be happy to work with the council to advise and help with the good running of the site and hopefully help to increase the number of users.
