Letter: R4GV is the Non-political Idea People Are Looking For

From R Connor

In response to: A Lib Dem Council Is the Best Way Forward for Guildford

Speaking as one of those ordinary folk who donated what they could to support R4GV during their campaign, I suggest Mr Pratt retract his snide insinuation about funding.

I think he has totally misread the main reason why Lib Dems succeeded well in some areas. It was mainly a protest vote by residents against the Tory majority and their behaviour, in particular, the thoroughly despised Local Plan for Guildford Plan (which some Lib Dems voted for), a plan made for developers, not the residents.

Surely it is obvious that the reason R4GV was so spectacularly successful in their gains is because they, not the Liberal Democrats, are the non-political idea people are now looking for.

We residents are sick and tired of not being listened to whilst watching our town and villages, degrade due to lack of cohesive vision, greed and political infighting.

I hope that Mr Pratt’s fear of something new is not an accurate opinion of the Liberal Democrat Party.

It would be wonderful if Liberal Democrats did listen to what the residents are saying in this result and change accordingly to work with the R4GV and GGG, for the greater good rather than mere party gain.

Let’s not kid ourselves. There’s no democracy without politics and what Guildford needs now is more, not less, of the real thing – participation, transparency, engagement, scrutiny, debate, compromise. Not the tribal block-voting that went on under the Tories’ lazy one-party state.

GGG has a united platform; R4GV less so. But they are now both going to have to perform supremely politically to get things done. I wish them every success!
