Letter: Railroading The Local Plan Is An Obvious Abuse of Power

From David Roberts

In response to: Delay Adopting Local Plan Until After the Election, Say Opposition Councillors

Railroading the draft Local Plan through the council just a week before local elections is such an obvious abuse of power that you’d think that Tory candidates would be routed for doing so. But this is Guildford, on which even the unopposed politicians of Dongying look with envious eyes.

Mr Whiteman [GBC’s MD], however, should ponder Section 2 of the Local Government Act 1986 and how council officers aiding and abetting this coup by the current majority group of councillors squares with their legal duty to enforce “purdah” during a pre-election period.

Quite so Mr Roberts, “What a tangled web we weave…”

What’s the old truism? “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

A hegemony may not amount to absolute power now but it’s moving closer by the day.
