Letter: SANG Policy Is Just a Tick-box Exercise

What good is SANG [Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace] if it’s just to tick boxes?

The Keens Lane Estate will be built very close to Whitmoor Common, a SPA [Special Protected Area] in Worplesdon. Along the eastern edge of that new estate is a bridleway that leads directly to Whitmoor, 400metres away.

The SANG allocated to the Keens Lane estate is in Wood Street Village. Anyone from the new estate who wishes to use the new SANG in Wood Street Village will have to put their dog in the car, drive four miles passing two open access Commons, Broadstreet and Littlefield, before arriving at the new SANG car park on Frog Grove Lane.

Would anyone like to have a guess at what percentage of residents of Keens Lane will go by foot with their dog directly to Whitmoor Common? My guess is probably all of them.

Another tick box exercise that serves no real value to anyone, resident, council or developer and in this case, the negative impact of losing some of the only agricultural land we have in Guildford and it’s biodiverse habitat.

I totally agree with Lisa Wright. It is farcicle to imaging anyone getting in their car to drive four miles, past two open access commons to walk on the new SANG.
