Letter: Some of Us Are Certainly Taking the Debt Issue Seriously

The debt is variously calculated to represent £15,000 to £19,000 for each household in West Surrey.

From John Ferns

In response to: Who Is Taking the Legacy Debt Issue Seriously?

Cllr Potter asks who is taking the legacy debt issue seriously. Some of us certainly are.

What is striking, however, is how late this debate appears to be reaching a wider audience.

The underlying figures have clearly been available for some time, yet much of the earlier discussion seems to have taken place in relatively limited channels.

It is only since the issue has been aired more fully in The Guildford Dragon NEWS that it has begun to attract the broader attention it warrants.

Given the scale of the sums involved, that in itself is telling – and reinforces the need for a much more open and accessible discussion of how this burden is to be shared.

I still await the other parties comments on my letter: It Is Less Unfair for Other Parts of Surrey to Pay the Debt
