Letter: The County Council is Poor at Asking the Right Questions

Published on: 2 Feb, 2019

From Angela Goodwin

Lib Dem county councillor for Guildford North

I think the issue is definitely around communication but also consultation.

From a personal perspective, Surrey County Council (SCC) is poor at asking the right questions within their consultations; there are rarely choices included so residents can make an informed choice.

Their consultations are long and very wordy – people just don’t have the time (or the will) to wade through them, especially when they are littered with jargon.

I’d like to hear from any residents who took the time to take part in the recent five consultations (Libraries, SEND [Special Educational Needs and Disabilities], CRCs [Community Recycling Centres], Companion Bus Passes and Children’s Centres) to hear their experiences. Perhaps SCC will take their comments on board for future consultation.

I completely agree. I read the recent consultation on Community Recycling Centres and thought, “This has been written by somebody who doesn’t want anybody to read it all the way through.”
