Letter: We Are Lucky to Have Such A Candidate

From Graham Moore

In response to: Dragon Interview, Anne Milton, Independent Parliamentary Candidate

The Martin Giles interview with Anne Milton shows Guildford is extremely fortunate in having the ideal candidate for this Parliamentary election.

The country has been deeply riven since the referendum of 2016, when 39% of the UK electorate voted to Leave the EU, marginally more than the 36% who voted to Remain. Those who did not vote may have done so out of idleness, but many also felt they were not qualified or well enough informed to choose between the alternatives.

After more than three years, we are all much better informed. We have learnt of matters not even mentioned during the referendum, such as the risk that leaving might lead to the break-up of the UK due to the problems of the Northern Irish border and the desire of the Scottish nationalists to Remain as an Independent member of the EU.

We still even do not understand what sort of customs agreement with the EU, our major trading partner, might be negotiable, or what the alternative of “WTO terms” actually means.

What is evident is that the country has become deeply divided (and thoroughly fed up with the whole thing) to the extent that “Let’s get Brexit done” does have a certain resonance.

“If it were done when ’tis done, ‘twere well it were done quickly” but, as Macbeth realised, a killing done swiftly does not end the matter.

Brexit will kill the economy for several years while we re-establish trading relationships with the EU and the rest of the world, and deal with the political problems of trying to hold the UK together.

Boris Johnson and his team are not of the calibre to deal with such a supremely difficult economic and political situation. Jeremy Corbyn, with his extreme left-wing policies, has even less chance of rescuing the economy or uniting the country.

Competitive promises of lavish extra government spending are worthless without a strong economy.

The best we can hope for from this election is that neither Mr Johnson nor Mr Corbyn get a majority, and a new leader eventually emerges to bring the country together.

Whether you have traditionally voted Labour, Liberal Democrat or Conservative you should now seriously consider voting for someone with a political agenda to overcome the polarised politics of the two main parties, which are so damaging to society.

Fortunately for us, Anne Milton is prepared to stand as such an Independent candidate. She is uniquely qualified. Not only has she represented Guildford faithfully as our MP for many years, she has, as a former deputy chief whip, a profound understanding of how the House of Commons works.

No other candidate matches these credentials

Graham Moore appears to ignore the simple fact that Anne Milton promised to abide both by her manifesto commitments and by the democratic vote of the country’s people and then actively conspired with those who wished to cheat the peoples’ decision. Both her manifesto and the referendum result said we would get out of the hated EU.

Anne Milton’s decision to ignore both makes her totally unfit to be the MP for Guildford.

How lucky we are to have amongst us people who understand the motives and reasoning of those who did not vote in the referendum. They also understand how ignorant and foolish were those who voted Leave. We are lucky indeed to have such wise people to protect us from ourselves and help us understand how “Brexit will kill the economy” and that Johnson and his team are low calibre.

During the referendum it was said that a result in favour of Leave would cause the economy to collapse. Somehow it still staggers along, even doing better than the rest of Europe. Earlier this year we were warned that if the UK left the EU on March 29 there would be a shortage of medicines. Brexit didn’t happen, but the shortages did, somewhat inconveniently for those wishing to claim a particular cause and effect.

How exactly will someone who has identified herself so strongly with one side of the argument overcome polarisation? In any case, her merits are irrelevant as the system is stacked against her. Only if she can take the entire Conservative Remain vote and persuade the student herd to switch from the Lib Dems can she hope to scrape through.

And let’s not forget that before standing as an Independent, Anne Milton was a Tory and the Tories have got us into this mess in the first place. We’ve had years of austerity whilst the Tories line their pockets, they won’t care if we leave the EU as they have sufficient wealth while the rest of the population will struggle to survive, as usual.

Anne Milton has been very good, belatedly, at making it clear what she’s against when it comes to Brexit; namely, she opposes a “No-Deal” Brexit.

But beyond that, what are her policies? And by policies I mean actual policies, rather than just platitudes.

When it comes to Brexit she happily voted for a Brexit deal on multiple occasions, so she clearly can’t be considered to be taking a Remain viewpoint.

And when it comes to the NHS, the welfare system, defence, police funding, tax cuts for businesses, etc she always voted in parliament whichever way the party told her to.

So whilst I applaud her newfound stance as “an independent, free from party politics” could Anne Milton perhaps tell us what policies she actually stands for? Or does she simply intend to continue being a Conservative in all but name and on all issues apart from Europe?
