Letter: Who Will Local Conservatives Support in Leadership Election?

Published on: 6 Jun, 2019
Updated on: 6 Jun, 2019

From Brian Creese

spokesperson for Guildford Labour

While local Conservatives are still recovering from their devastating set-backs in the local elections, they can at least console themselves with the knowledge that they will soon be able to vote for a new Prime Minister.

It would be interesting to hear from local councillors, party officials and indeed, our MP, as to where their preferences lie.

Do they support the gung ho Trump favourite Boris, their macho near neighbour Dominic ‘Lets prorogue parliament’ Raab or their equally near neighbour Michel ‘Govey’ Gove?

Given that only a tiny number of people have been given the responsibility of electing our Prime Minister, it would be instructive to hear their preferences.

Brian Creese shouldn’t expect a reply via this news website.

Former GBC leader Paul Spooner has said that the GBC Conservative Group do not want to be contacted by The Dragon, although that hasn’t stopped former Cllr Brooker writing to The Dragon to defend the previous administration. Perhaps he didn’t get the memo or for Guildford Conservatives communication is a one-way street?

Editor’s note: the GBC Conservative Group only comprises Conservative councillors currently serving at GBC. Several Guildford Conservatives have contributed to The Guildford Dragon since Cllr Spooner’s direction.

By “tiny number” Brian Creese is presumably referring to the few hundred in the Parliamentary party although the final vote will involve the entire party, thought to be in the region of 160,000.

Far tinier, even than the Parliamentary Conservative party, is the group of 28 who nominated Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the EU. The slightly larger, though still tiny, group in the EU Parliament only endorsed the appointment.

In answer to the question posed, according to the Conservative party website, Sir Paul Beresford supports Boris Johnson, Anne Milton supports Michael Gove, as does Gove himself, presumably, and Jonathan Lord supports Dominic Raab.
