From Gordon Jackson

This is a sad day for me. I have always been opposed to Brexit, but I have watched the events of the last few weeks with deepening concern and can no longer campaign for a party that does not support the liberal beliefs that I hold dear.

I have always believed in a free market economy where business is allowed to flourish for the benefit of the community as a whole and in policies that are compassionate and take account of those, who are less well off in society.

It seems to me that a hard or “no-deal” Brexit will have a massive adverse impact on both these areas and the idea that we are somehow going to improve our trading relationships as a small independent nation is, frankly, delusional. I deplore the actions that have been taken to attempt to silence Parliament and to remove the whip from excellent MPs such as Anne Milton.

For some time, I have recognised that party politics have very little relevance to local government. The vast majority of councillors work hard to do what they believe is right for their residents and it is actually very difficult to distinguish the policies of the major parties in many key areas at a borough level. I will continue to represent the residents of Pirbright and the wider community as an Independent councillor to the best of my ability.

Surely one should not walk away from a situation one opposes?

The people who relied on Cllr Jackson for other things than exiting the EU deserve more than that? “Conscience does make cowards of us all.” If he is so certain everything will be so terrible (and it might, or might not be) why didn’t he stay and try to make it work? Or does he have a crystal ball?

He hasn’t left the council but has changed political party.

Our borough councillors should focus on local issues such as the dreadful Local Plan instead of national party politics

Therefore, why is Cllr Jackson not joining R4GV or GGG rather than staying as a one-man Independent band? Look what happened last year to other former Conservatives, Messrs Rooth and McShee who were excluded from committee membership.
