Letter: Yes, We Have A Lot to Learn from Freiburg

Freiburg, Germany

From Simon Schulz

In response to: Why Not See How Freiburg Manages to Preserve Their Green Space?

I visit Freiburg every now and then and it is a wonderful town; although, like Guildford, sandwiched amongst hills, it is very easy to get around as a pedestrian or cyclist without needing a car.

In fact, my friend there commented that he had sold his car because he just didn’t feel he needed one. He just hires one when needed and can get one within half an hour (they are left parked around the town so there’ll be one nearby if needed – facilitated by the fact that most people feel they don’t need one, most of the time). Most people seem to walk or cycle to work.

I think that there is a lot Guildford councillors could learn about town planning from Freiburg.
