The Dragon Says: However Difficult a Choice, We Must Exercise Our Democratic Right

Today, Guildford and every other constituency in the United Kingdom, goes to the polls to elect fresh or experienced MPs who will, hopefully, establish a new House of Commons.

This is the most crucial election in nearly 75 years, since the end of the Second World War. This vote will decide not just our future for the next five years but that of our children and grandchildren as part of the EU, or not, and all which goes with that. So much is at stake.

The result in Guildford is on a knife-edge and could prove critical in the overall outcome.

Although initial Lib Dem hopes for a major swing towards them have, according to all polls, not appeared, they have become the focus for those wishing to see an end to Brexit and an end to the traditional Conservative domination of the Guildford seat.

Former Conservative Anne Milton’s stand as an anti-Boris Johnson Independent has helped them. By how much will be a vital factor.

The Labour vote is almost certain to suffer a squeeze from the main two parties here. Yet again, how many of their supporters decide to vote tactically could prove decisive.

But the Conservatives still have solid support. Some will remain loyal despite their personal Remain-leaning view on Brexit. For Leave supporters of any political persuasion, the Conservatives may be the only choice this time, despite reservations on other major issues such as climate change, the NHS or even local planning.

We might not think much of the choice, but it is in our hands: our right to make that decision is precious, a right for which, over generations, many have paid for with their lives. It is our duty to exercise that democratic right. Please do.

The Dragon will be at the count in Guildford to report results as they unfold. We intend to kick off with interviewing the returning officer, GBC’s MD, James Whiteman, on the count process.

We’ll also be greatly aided by a comprehensive review of the election campaign in Guildford, within a national context, from the talented Professor Amelia Hadfield, head of the Department of Politics at the University of Surrey.

The final Guildford result is expected to be announced between 4am and 5am. Please visit our site for updates.
