Thirteen young people from around Surrey ran a cake sale in Guildford High Street on Wednesday (August 4) to raise funds for plants for the Pilgrims Wood residential and dementia care home garden in Sandy Lane, Artington.
The 16- and 17-year-olds olds were taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme designed to give young people new experiences and build confidence.
Izzy Jarman and Amy Stoneham from Reigate, said the two-week programme had started with a two-day team building session in Walton Firs, the adventure and activity centre in Cobham.
The pair, who had taken the lead in planning for the group, jointly said it had given them a chance to help others and to get to know the people in the team, and making friends they will keep.
They added that they want to help people in the community, especially older people, who after the pandemic might feel forgotten.
Team leader Mitchell MacKenzie and NCS assistant wave manager Rhi Bailey said the young people had decided how they wanted to help their community and then organised it themselves. Rhi said: “It’s a good way for them to work towards independence
“With £500 raised so far, the group will work in the Pilgrim Wood garden on Thursday and Friday (August 5 and 6) with the plants bought from the money raised.”
